Frequently Asked Questions

Is driving to Thamdanda actually safer than flying to Lukla? I’m terrified of the Lukla flight, but I’ve heard the roads are also dangerous. Which is the lesser of two evils?

This is the most common question we receive. While the flight to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) is weather-dependent and visually intimidating, it is statistically quite efficient. However, the drive to Thamdanda completely eliminates the risk of flight cancellation due to cloud cover. Honest Reality: The drive is long (12–14 hours) and the final section from Phaplu to Thamdanda is off-road, bumpy, and winds along mountain cliffs. It is not a "relaxing" alternative. We use sturdy 4WD jeeps (Scorpio or Land Cruiser) with experienced drivers, but if you suffer from motion sickness or back issues, the flight might actually be physically easier. Our Advice: Choose the drive if you have strict time constraints (flights get cancelled for days) or a genuine phobia of small planes. Choose the flight for comfort.

How bad is the drive from Kathmandu to Thamdanda really? Can we do it in one day or should we split it up?

We value transparency: this is a grueling day. The itinerary lists it as "Day 2," but expect a 4:00 AM or 5:00 AM start and an arrival after sunset.

  • The Highway: The first 6–7 hours to Ghurmi are on blacktop (paved) but very winding roads.

  • The Off-Road: The last 4–5 hours from Salleri/Phaplu to Thamdanda are on rough dirt tracks.

  • Splitting the trip: We highly recommend our US/EU clients split this into two days (sleeping in Phaplu) if you value comfort. However, doing it in one day is standard for keeping the itinerary to 16 days. Expect dust, bumps, and limited "western-style" toilet facilities along the highway.

Does starting from Thamdanda (2,326m) help with altitude sickness compared to flying into Lukla (2,840m)?

Yes, significantly. This is the biggest physiological advantage of the road route. By driving to 2,326m and trekking up to Phakding (2,640m) on Day 3, you are entering the Khumbu region more gradually than flying directly to 2,840m. You avoid the "shock" of landing at high altitude. However: You still must adhere to the acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar (Day 5) and Dingboche (Day 8). Do not skip these just because you drove; the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) increases drastically above 4,000m regardless of how you arrived.

What are the toilets and accommodation like on the trail? I’ve heard horror stories about squat toilets and cold rooms.

Standards vary by altitude.

  • Lower Trail (Phakding to Namche): You will find "Western" flush toilets and rooms with attached bathrooms in many lodges.

  • Higher Trail (Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep): Facilities become basic. Expect shared squat toilets (bring your own toilet paper) and frozen water buckets in the morning. Bedding: Teahouse bedrooms are unheated. We provide sleeping bags rated for -20°C, but you will sleep in plywood rooms that reach freezing temperatures at night. The dining halls are the only heated spaces (by yak dung stove). Hygiene Tip: We strictly advise using hand sanitizer constantly. Norovirus is common in the Khumbu. Avoid meat after Namche Bazaar.

Day 10 (Lobuche -> Gorakshep -> EBC -> Gorakshep) looks incredibly long. Is it possible for a regular fit person?

This is physically the hardest day of the itinerary. You are trekking at 5,000m+ where oxygen is 50% of sea level.

  • The Reality: It takes ~3 hours to reach Gorakshep for lunch, then another 4–5 hours round-trip to Base Camp.

  • Safety Check: If you are struggling with headaches or fatigue at Lobuche, our guides may advise you to skip EBC or stop at Gorakshep.

  • Managing Expectations: You do not sleep at EBC (camping requires a special expedition permit). You touch the rock, take photos, and return to Gorakshep to sleep. It is exhausting but manageable if you pace yourself.

Do I really need travel insurance? Can't I just pay for a helicopter if I need one?

Insurance is mandatory for all our clients. A helicopter evacuation from Gorakshep or Dingboche costs between $4,000 and $6,000 USD (payable immediately upfront if you have no insurance). Your policy must explicitly cover:

  1. High Altitude Trekking up to 6,000m (Standard policies often cap at 3,000m).

  2. Helicopter Evacuation (Search & Rescue). We check your policy details in Kathmandu before departure. If you get AMS or a sprained ankle at 5,000m, a jeep is not an option—only a chopper can get you out.

How much cash do I need to bring? Isn't everything included in the package?

While our packages cover transport, permits, lodging, and meals (if full board), there are local costs you must pay in cash (Nepalese Rupees).

  • Charging Electronics: $3–$5 per device (increases with altitude).

  • Wi-Fi Cards (Everest Link): ~$5 for 1GB.

  • Hot Showers: $4–$7 per shower (often a bucket shower higher up).

  • Tips: It is customary to tip guides and porters at the end (approx. 10-15% of trek cost). Recommendation: Bring approx. $15–$20 USD per day in local currency (NPR) for these extras. ATMs in Namche Bazaar are unreliable; ATMs in Kathmandu are safe.

Can I trek this route solo without a guide? I prefer walking alone.

As of April 2023, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) banned solo trekking for international tourists in national parks (TIMS card requirement). You must hire at least a licensed guide or porter-guide through a registered agency. Safety: Aside from the rules, the trail from Thamdanda to Phakding has many mule trains and confusing junctions. Having a guide ensures you don't get lost in the lower Solukhumbu hills and helps navigate the complex teahouse booking system during peak season.
