Frequently Asked Questions

Is it actually safe to do the ABC trek in 4 days? I'm worried about altitude sickness (AMS) since the ascent seems very fast compared to the 7-10 day versions.

No, it is not "standard," but it is manageable for physically fit hikers if handled correctly. In a 4-day push, you gain altitude rapidly, reaching 4,130m (13,550ft) by Day 3. We mitigate risk by starting the trek from a higher point (Samrung/Jhinu) via jeep and monitoring your blood oxygen levels daily. However, we always tell travelers that if you show symptoms of AMS at Deurali (3,200m), you must stop; the helicopter is your exit, but it shouldn't be your "emergency plan" for poor acclimatization.

Does travel insurance cover the helicopter return from ABC if it's not a medical emergency? I want to trek up and fly out to save time.

Generally, no. Standard travel insurance (like World Nomads or Global Rescue) only covers "Emergency Evacuation" deemed medically necessary by a doctor or our lead guide. If you are flying out simply to save time or enjoy the view, this is a "Heli-Charter," and you must pay out of pocket. We usually book these as "group joining" flights to keep costs around $400–$600 per person, but you should not expect your insurance company to reimburse this as an evacuation.

What is the deal with drinking water? I've heard mixed things about using purification tablets vs. just buying bottled water to avoid 'Delhi Belly' in the mountains.

We strongly discourage buying plastic bottled water above Sinuwa to reduce waste in the Sanctuary. In our experience, the most reliable method is using a Grayl filter or high-quality UV Steripen combined with "boiled water" purchased from teahouses. While tap water is cleaner in the mountains than in Kathmandu, parasites like Giardia are still a risk. We suggest a "double-barrier" approach: filtered water for the trail and strictly hot, boiled tea during meals.

What happens if the helicopter can’t fly out of ABC on Day 4 due to weather? Does the company just leave us there, or is there a backup plan to walk down?

Weather in the Annapurna Sanctuary is unpredictable; if the heli is grounded, we wait for a weather window, but safety is our priority. If the flight is canceled for the day, we stay an extra night at ABC or start trekking down to a lower elevation where a heli can safely land. We always advise our clients to have a "buffer day" in Pokhara or Kathmandu after the trek. We don't "leave" you; our guide stays with you until you are back in the city, but any extra accommodation or walking days incurred due to weather are typically the traveler's responsibility.

Is there a weight limit for the helicopter return? I’m worried my trekking pack will be too heavy or that I’ll have to leave gear behind.

Yes, there is a strict limit. Helicopters at high altitudes (4,000m+) have reduced lift capacity. Usually, the limit is 12kg to 16kg  per person for the return flight. If you are in a full group of five passengers, the pilot may be very strict about total weight. We recommend leaving any non-trekking gear (suitcases, clean city clothes) at our office or your hotel in Pokhara before you start. If you are over the limit, you may be asked to pay an extra fee or, in rare cases, send your bag down with a porter.

I’ve read about 'The Meat Rule' in the mountains. Is it true that I should stay vegetarian for the whole 4-day trek to avoid getting sick?

Yes, we strongly recommend a vegetarian diet once you pass Chhomrong. In the Annapurna Sanctuary, meat is often carried up by porters for days without refrigeration, increasing the risk of food poisoning. A stomach bug on a 4-day itinerary will effectively end your trek. Our guides will encourage you to stick to Dal Bhat (lentils and rice), pasta, or eggs. We prioritize your digestive health because, on this short timeline, there is no "rest day" to recover from a GI issue.

Are the toilets at the ABC teahouses the 'squat' type or Western style? And do I need to bring my own toilet paper?

It is a mix. Lower down, you will find Western-style sit-down toilets, but at higher elevations and in simpler lodges, "squat" toilets are standard. Almost all bathrooms are shared. Yes, you must bring your own toilet paper; it is rarely provided and is expensive to buy on the trail. We also suggest bringing a small bottle of hand sanitizer and biodegradable wet wipes, as hot water for washing hands is not always available in the communal bathroom areas.
