The Annapurna Circuit Tilicho Lake Trek is one of Nepal’s most spectacular trekking routes, combining the classic Annapurna Circuit with the stunning Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world at 4,919 meters. This trek takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush subtropical forests and terraced farmlands to high alpine valleys and dramatic mountain passes. Along the way, trekkers experience traditional villages, ancient monasteries, and breathtaking views of peaks like Annapurna II, Lamjung Himal, Dhaulagiri, and Thorong Peak. The journey also challenges adventurers with high-altitude passes, including the famous Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters), while rewarding them with serene glacial lakes, snow-capped summits, and the spiritual site of Muktinath. It’s a trek that perfectly balances natural beauty, cultural experiences, and adventure.

The trek typically starts from Dharapani, a small town in the Marsyangdi Valley, which is accessible by a scenic drive from Besisahar. From Dharapani, the trail gradually ascends along the Marsyangdi River, passing charming villages such as Chame, Pisang, and Manang, offering acclimatization opportunities. Trekkers then make their way toward Khangsar and Tilicho Base Camp to visit the majestic Tilicho Lake. After returning from the lake, the trek continues over the Thorong La Pass, descending through the Kali Gandaki Valley to reach Muktinath and Jomsom. The route finally winds down through the cultural villages of Marpha, Tatopani, and Ghorepani, ending with a sunrise hike at Poon Hill before returning to Pokhara and Kathmandu. This trek offers a perfect mix of natural wonders, high-altitude adventure, and rich Himalayan culture.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is the trek to Tilicho Lake?

Tilicho Lake is a high-altitude, moderately strenuous side trek; the main challenges are the long ascent above 4,000 m, exposure to weather, and a few steep, rough sections (especially above Shree Kharka). In our experience, most fit trekkers who have acclimatized well in Manang can manage it, but we treat it as a serious high-altitude day: early start, very slow pace, and turnaround times if weather or symptoms deteriorate. We only send clients up if they are already comfortable at Manang’s altitude and have no AMS signs.

Hi, I’m not an experienced trekker but do walk a lot. Would love to see Annapurna – do you need to be experienced trekker to see the views and amazing scenery? Can you do semi strenuous walks?

You do not need to be a mountaineer, but the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake and Thorong La is more demanding than “semi-strenuous” day hikes. Most of the route is long walking days on good trails, but the high sections (Tilicho Base Camp, Tilicho Lake, Thorong La) are physically and mentally tough because of thin air and long ascents. In our experience, strong hill walkers who prepare with cardio and hill training can complete it, provided they respect acclimatization and are ready for 10–15+ trekking days.

What is the food and lodging situation at Tilicho Base Camp? I've heard it's very basic. Should I bring a sleeping bag liner? Is the food safe to eat there?

Tilicho Base Camp (4150m) has the most basic teahouses on the route due to its remote location. Rooms are unheated, with shared toilets. A sleeping bag liner is essential, and a good cold-weather sleeping bag (rentable in Kathmandu) is mandatory. The menu is limited—mainly dal bhat, noodles, and simple fried items. Hygiene is basic but standard. We eat at these lodges to support the local community and our guides inspect the kitchen. Stick to hot, cooked meals and avoid meat at this altitude.

Hi a friend and I are planning to do the Annapurna circuit trek solo and are wondering if helicopter rescue insurance is definitely required and if so what companies insure solo trekking in Nepal?

Helicopter rescue insurance is not legally mandatory, but we strongly consider it essential for this route because above Manang your emergency options are basically helicopter or horse. We always require our clients to have a policy that covers trekking up to at least 6,000 m and helicopter evacuation, including for solo travel. You must read the policy wording carefully; many mainstream insurers exclude high-altitude trekking or solo trips. When we arrange rescue, we deal directly with the insurer’s assistance company; without valid cover, you would need to pay the helicopter yourself, often several thousand US dollars.

How scary is the Tilicho Lake landslide section really? I'm afraid of heights and even a small portion of the EBC trek scared me due to a steep drop-off.

The landslide zone between Shri Kharka and Tilicho Base Camp is technically the most "nerve-wracking" part of the trek. While the trail is roughly 2 feet wide, the terrain consists of loose scree and steep slopes. For those with a fear of heights, it can feel like a 7/10 on the "scary scale." We manage this by starting your hike at first light (around 5:00 AM) to cross before the afternoon winds begin, which can dislodge small rocks. Our guides act as "spotters" to watch for falling rocks while you focus on your footing. It is manageable if you go slowly and avoid using earbuds so you can hear the terrain.

Did you have any issues with drinking water? Did you fall sick from eating the local food etc?

Most trekkers who follow basic hygiene finish the trek without serious stomach issues, but water and food safety are still important. We recommend treating water (filter, tablets, or UV) or sticking to boiled water/tea from teahouses, and avoiding raw salads, unpeeled fruit, and reheated food. In our experience, simple local dishes like dal bhat are usually well-cooked and safe. We also remind clients to wash hands or use sanitizer regularly; these habits matter more than any single “magic” solution.

Is it possible to skip the road sections? I've heard the lower parts are dusty and full of jeeps now.

Yes, and we highly recommend it. The road construction has changed the classic Circuit. We typically arrange a private or shared jeep from Kathmandu/Besisahar directly to Dharapani or Chame. This skips the dusty, motorized sections and allows you to spend those "saved" days on the side trip to Tilicho Lake and better acclimatization in Manang. Starting at Chame (2,670m) is the modern standard for Western travelers who want a high-quality wilderness experience without the distraction of traffic.

Is it possible to buy/rent crampons at Tilicho base camp?

It is sometimes possible to find basic crampons at Tilicho Base Camp, but stock is very limited and quality uncertain, so we never rely on it. In normal autumn/spring conditions, most of our groups do not need crampons; sturdy boots and trekking poles are usually enough, with occasional short snow patches. If there is heavy snow or ice, we generally arrange any technical gear in Manang or even Kathmandu/Pokhara before heading up. We check current conditions close to your departure and advise honestly whether traction devices are required for safety.

Hi, how is it with electricity after Manang? is there any possibility to buy a power bank in Manang?

You can usually charge phones and small devices in dining areas after Manang, including at Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong Phedi, but supply is solar-dependent and some lodges restrict charging power-hungry items like power banks. We always recommend carrying a spare power bank from Kathmandu; if yours fails, Manang sometimes has 10,000 mAh power banks for sale, but stock is limited and prices are higher. It’s much safer to arrive with reliable backup power rather than rely on finding a shop at altitude.

Which sim card can you recommend for the Annapurna Circuit? And is there a bank in Thamel where you have had good experiences?

We usually recommend NTC or Ncell SIM cards for the Annapurna region; NTC often has slightly better coverage along many parts of the trail, but there are still big dead zones (especially between Manang and Muktinath). We advise buying your SIM in Kathmandu and testing data before leaving the city. In Thamel, there are several bank ATMs and exchange counters; we suggest using bank ATMs in secure locations and withdrawing enough NPR for the trek, as ATMs are rare once you start walking.
