Frequently Asked Questions

Is it actually safe to fly from Pokhara (800m) and land at 4,130m in 20 minutes? Don't you get immediate altitude sickness?

Yes, it is safe for most healthy travelers, but there is a specific protocol we follow. While you are ascending over 3,300m (10,000ft) rapidly, the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is mitigated by the short duration of the stay. We limit ground time at Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) to 15–30 minutes. This is enough time for photos and a quick coffee but short enough that your body doesn't fully react to the pressure change. If you have a history of severe altitude issues, we recommend consulting a doctor about taking half a dose of Diamox the night before.

What happens if the weather is bad on the morning of the flight? Do I lose my money or can I reschedule?

In Nepal, weather is the ultimate boss. If we cannot fly due to visibility or wind, we first attempt to push the flight back by an hour or two. If the entire day is a washout, we offer two clear options: a full refund (minus a small $20–$30 bank/admin fee) or a free reschedule for the next morning. We strongly advise booking your heli tour for your first available morning in Pokhara to allow for a "buffer day" in case of such delays.

I am a solo traveler. Can I join a group to bring the cost down, or do I have to charter the whole thing for $2,500+?

You don't need to charter a private flight. We regularly organize "Group Joining" flights where you pay per seat, typically between $450 and $550USD depending on the season. We manage the logistics of matching you with 4 other travelers. However, please be aware that group flights require all 5 seats to be filled; if we can't find a full group, the flight may be canceled or the price adjusted. We communicate these status updates 12–24 hours in advance.

Is there a strict weight limit for passengers? We are a family of four and some of us are larger.

Weight is a critical safety factor for high-altitude landings. A standard B3e Airbus helicopter can carry roughly 450kg to 500kg (990–1100 lbs) total at ABC’s altitude. If a group of 5 exceeds this, the pilot will require a "shuttle", meaning the heli drops some people at a lower point and does two trips to the base camp. This incurs an extra cost. We always ask for individual weights during booking to ensure the flight is balanced and safe.

Does standard travel insurance cover a helicopter tour, or do I need specific 'Extreme Sports' coverage?

Standard travel insurance often excludes "aerial activities" or altitudes above 3,000m. For a Heli Tour, you need a policy that specifically covers Helicopter Evacuation up to 5,000m. While this is a scenic tour and not a "rescue," having this coverage is mandatory for your own protection should a medical issue arise while at the base camp. We recommend providers like World Nomads or Global Rescue for US/EU citizens.

How do Pokhara weather delays compare to the Lukla airport issues I've read about?

Pokhara is significantly more stable than Lukla (the gateway to Everest), but it still has its quirks. While Lukla flights are often canceled for days, Pokhara Heli tours are usually only delayed by morning fog or monsoon clouds. If the valley is foggy, we simply wait until 8:00 or 9:00 AM for it to burn off. Unlike the fixed-wing planes in Lukla, helicopters have more flexibility to find "windows" in the weather, making the Annapurna tour much more reliable.

Can I trek up to ABC on my own and just book a helicopter to fly me back down to Pokhara?

This is a very popular request. It saves you 2-3 days of grueling downhill hiking. We can arrange a "one-way pickup," but it is more expensive than a round-trip tour because the helicopter often flies up empty. A one-way pickup usually costs between $800 and $1,000 USD for the whole craft, or about $350 if you can sync with a group already flying up. You must have a working satellite or local SIM (Ncell/NTC) to coordinate the exact pickup time with us.

What is the food/hygiene situation like if we stop for breakfast at the Base Camp?

The lodges at ABC are basic. Breakfast usually consists of eggs, porridge, or pancakes. While hygiene is generally good, the high altitude means water boils at a lower temperature ($86^\circ C$), so we recommend sticking to bottled water or hot tea/coffee. Avoid raw vegetables at the base camp. Note: Breakfast is rarely included in the tour price; expect to pay about $10–$15 USD in cash (NPR) for a simple meal at 4,000m.

Do I need to bring any special gear for the 2-hour heli tour? Can I go in sneakers?

You don't need heavy trekking boots, but sneakers are risky if there is snow on the helipad (common from Nov–Mar). We recommend sturdy shoes with grip and a heavy down jacket. Even if it's 20°C (68°F) in Pokhara, it can be -5°C (23°F) with wind chill at the base camp. Sunglasses are mandatory to prevent snow blindness from the high-altitude glare.
