Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true that Westerners have to pay a $100 per day "sustainable development fee" on top of the tour costs? It seems really steep compared to what travelers from neighboring countries pay.

Yes, the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is currently $100 USD per person, per night for US and European passport holders. While this is a significant cost, it is a government-mandated tax that funds free healthcare, education, and carbon-neutral infrastructure in Bhutan. In our experience, we find it best to view this as a "mandatory donation" rather than a service fee. It is included in the "Full Board" price we quote you, so there are no surprises at the border. Note that this fee is non-negotiable and does not include your guide, driver, or hotels.

Can I actually walk around Thimphu or Paro by myself, or does the guide have to be with me 24/7? I’m used to independent travel and don't want to feel "babied."

You have more freedom than you might think. While a licensed guide is mandatory for visiting all dzongs (fortresses), monasteries, and museums, you are free to explore the main streets of Thimphu and Paro on your own in the evenings. We usually drop our guests at their hotel or a central point, and you can go for coffee or browse shops independently. However, for any scheduled "sightseeing" on your itinerary, the government requires the guide to accompany you to ensure cultural sites are respected.

Is the hike to Tiger’s Nest actually difficult? I'm worried about the altitude and the number of steps. Can someone with moderate fitness handle it?

It is a "moderate" hike, but the altitude (reaching roughly 10,240ft / 3,120m) makes it feel harder. On a 4-day trip, we usually schedule this for Day 3 to give you a little time to adjust in Thimphu first. There are about 700–800 stone steps at the final stretch that can be taxing on the knees. We always provide walking poles, and if you are feeling the strain, we can arrange a horse for the first half of the ascent. We recommend a slow, steady pace, this isn't a race, and the views from the halfway cafeteria are just as stunning if you need to stop there.

f I'm flying from Kathmandu to Paro, how often do flights get delayed? Should I have a buffer day back in Nepal before my international flight home?

Paro is one of the world’s most challenging airports; pilots fly by visual sight only. This means weather delays are common, particularly in monsoon (July-Aug) or winter fog. We strongly advise our US/EU clients to keep at least one "buffer day" in Kathmandu after returning from Bhutan before catching your long-haul flight home. If the clouds are too low in Paro, the plane simply won't land, and flights are often rescheduled for the next morning.

What is "Full Board" food really like? Is it just the same buffet every day, and is the water safe to drink?

"Full Board" typically means breakfast and dinner at your hotel and lunch at designated tourist restaurants. While buffet-style is common to accommodate groups, we can request a la carte local dishes like Ema Datshi (chili cheese). Be aware: traditional Bhutanese food is very spicy. We always ensure mild options (potatoes, pasta, or fried rice) are available for Western palates. Regarding water: do not drink tap water. We provide treated or bottled mineral water throughout the trip, and we recommend using it even for brushing your teeth to avoid "Himalayan belly."
