The terrain is rocky and remote, offering a true wilderness experience. As we approach Tilicho Base Camp, the air gets thinner, and the scenery becomes more dramatic, dominated by the north face of Tilicho Peak (7,134 m). The Base Camp serves as the staging point for those visiting the world's highest lake. It is a barren but beautiful location, offering a sense of solitude and adventure. The trek involves a descent followed by a gradual ascent through a narrow valley carved by the river. The name "Yak Kharka" translates to "Yak Pasture," and you will likely see these hardy animals grazing on the sparse high-altitude grass. The vegetation is minimal, consisting mainly of scrub juniper and alpine grass. This section of the trek is particularly known for spotting Himalayan wildlife such as Blue Sheep (Bharal) and birds of prey. It is a quieter, more remote stretch of the trek. Trek Yak Kharka – Chulu West Base Camp

Today we leave the standard trekking trail and head towards the high alpine zone designated as our Base Camp. The path is steep and rugged, requiring careful footing on scree and rocky terrain. As we ascend, the views of the surrounding peaks, including Chulu East and the overarching Annapurna massif, become increasingly spectacular. Base Camp is situated on a ridge or plateau, offering a strategic vantage point for our summit push. Upon arrival, our climbing Sherpa team will set up the tents and prepare the kitchen. This is the transition point from trekking to mountaineering. Overnight at Chulu West Base Camp.

Climb to High Camp

We move our gear and supplies from Base Camp to High Camp, a physically demanding day due to the steep gradient and thinner air. The climb involves navigating snow slopes and potentially using fixed lines in steeper sections. Carrying a light pack helps with acclimatization. High Camp is strategically placed to minimize the distance to the summit on our push day. The views from here are awe-inspiring, looking down over the Marsyangdi Valley and up towards the summit ridge. We will review our climbing techniques, including the proper use of jumars, crampons, and ice axes. Early dinner is served to prepare for an early start. Overnight at High Camp.

Day 13

Acclimatization & Training at High Camp

This day is reserved for acclimatization and final preparations at High Camp. It is crucial to rest the body while staying hydrated and energized. If conditions permit, we may do a short skills refresher on a nearby snow slope, practicing self-arrest and rope team travel. The guides will check the weather forecast and snow conditions to determine the optimal window for the summit attempt. Mental preparation is equally important; spend the afternoon visualizing the climb and organizing your summit gear (goggles, warm layers, snacks). This buffer day significantly increases our chances of a successful summit. Overnight at High Camp.

Max Altitude: 5,100m (16,732ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Accommodation: Tented Camp at High Camp.
Day 14

Summit Day – Chulu West Peak (6,419 m) – Return to Base Camp (4,700 m)

We wake up well before dawn (around 2:00 AM) to begin our summit push. Headlamps pierce the darkness as we ascend the snow slopes. The climb involves a combination of walking on a glacier and scrambling up a rocky ridge. The final section to the summit is a steep snow climb that requires stamina and careful footing. As the sun rises, we are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama of some of the world's highest peaks, including Dhaulagiri I, Manaslu, and the entire Annapurna range. Standing atop Chulu West (6,419 m) is a monumental achievement. After celebrating and taking photos, we carefully descend to High Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Base Camp. Overnight at Base Camp.

Max Altitude: 6,419m (21,059ft)
Duration: 9–10 hours.
Distance: 12KM
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

We pass through Yak Kharka again and continue through the valley to Thorung Phedi, which translates to "Foot of the Hill." This small settlement is a cluster of teahouses situated at the base of the Thorung La Pass. It serves as the final stop before crossing the highest pass of the trek. The atmosphere here is lively, filled with trekkers preparing for the next day's challenge. Relax your muscles and enjoy a warm meal. Overnight in Thorung Phedi.

Today is one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the expedition. We start early to cross Thorung La, the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit at 5,416 m. The trail is steep and often covered in snow or ice. Prayer flags flutter at the pass, marking the divide between the Manang and Mustang districts. The views from the top are unparalleled. From the pass, we make a long, steep descent into the Kali Gandaki Valley. The landscape transforms into the arid, desert-like environment of Mustang. We eventually reach Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, famous for its eternal flame and 108 water spouts. Overnight in Muktinath.

The drive is scenic, following the riverbank with views of the Nilgiri peaks and Dhaulagiri I towering above. We stop in the town of Jomsom, the administrative center of the Mustang region. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chulu West significantly more difficult than Island Peak? I've heard conflicting reports about the technicality.

Yes, it is physically more demanding. While both are graded as PD+ to AD (fairly difficult), Chulu West involves a much longer "slog" on a high-altitude ridge. Unlike Island Peak, which has a very short, steep headwall, Chulu West requires navigating a long, exposed snow ridge that can be exhausting. We recommend this for trekkers who have already done a 6,000m peak or have significant high-altitude experience, as the summit day can last 10–12 hours.

What are the specific requirements for travel insurance if I'm attempting a 6,000m peak like Chulu West?

Standard travel insurance will not cover you. You must verify that your policy covers "Mountaineering/Climbing with ropes and guides" up to 6,500 meters. We require all our climbers to have a policy that specifically includes "Emergency Helicopter Evacuation." In Nepal, helicopters will not fly without a payment guarantee, and we facilitate the rescue by coordinating with your insurer. Ensure your provider (like Global Rescue or World Nomads Level 2) explicitly lists these altitudes.

I have no technical ice climbing experience. Can I still do Chulu West with a guide?

Yes, but you must be "mountain-fit." You don't need to be a professional climber, but you must be comfortable using crampons, an ice axe, and a Jumar (ascender) on fixed ropes. We dedicate Day 13 (High Camp) specifically for technical training. Our Sherpas will teach you the exact skills needed for the summit push. However, if you are uncomfortable with heights or "exposure" (steep drops on either side of a ridge), this may not be the right peak for you.

How do the logistics for charging electronics and internet work once we leave the main tea houses for Base Camp?

Once you move from Yak Kharka to Chulu West Base Camp and High Camp, there is no electricity or Wi-Fi. You will be in a wilderness camping setting for about 3–4 days. We strongly recommend bringing a high-capacity power bank ($20,000mAh$ or more). Solar chargers are useful but unreliable if it's cloudy. Keep your batteries (and phone) inside your sleeping bag at night; the cold at 5,000m+ will drain them in minutes otherwise.

What is the actual summit success rate? Is it worth adding a reserve day?

Success rates are roughly 60–70%, primarily due to weather and altitude sickness. In our experience, having a "Reserve Day" (which we include in our flexible logistics) is the single best way to increase your chances. If there are high winds on Day 14, we wait. Without a buffer, your climb ends if the weather isn't perfect on that one specific morning. We also use oximeters twice daily to catch AMS symptoms early; we prioritize your health over reaching the summit.
