Your day begins with a hotel pick-up in Kathmandu, followed by a private transfer to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport. After check-in, you board a helicopter for an unforgettable flight toward the Everest region. The helicopter flies east over lush hills, rivers, and settlements, crossing the scenic Lamjura-La Pass (3,550 m) and Dolakha village before reaching Lukla (2,860 m), the gateway to the Everest region. After a short refueling stop, the helicopter continues deeper into the Khumbu Valley, offering stunning aerial views of Namche Bazaar, Phakding, and the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

From Lukla, the helicopter flies toward Kala Patthar (5,450 m), one of the best viewpoints of Mount Everest. Frequently Asked Questions

Is it actually safe to fly from Kathmandu (1,400m) straight up to Kala Patthar (5,500m) in one morning? I’m worried about getting hit with severe altitude sickness instantly.

Yes, it is safe, but with a strict caveat: time management. Because you are ascending nearly 4,000 meters in an hour, we limit ground time at Kala Patthar to 10–15 minutes. This "touch-and-go" window is too short for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) to fully develop, as the body typically takes a few hours to react to the pressure change. We also carry supplemental oxygen on every flight. However, if you have a pre-existing respiratory or heart condition, you must consult a doctor first, as the thin air is immediate and noticeable.

What is the total cost transparency for a shared flight? Are there hidden fees like airport taxes or national park permits that aren't mentioned in the $1,000–$1,200 price tag?

Transparency is key. Most "shared" rates ($1,100–$1,300) include the flight and breakfast at Everest View Hotel. However, $30 for the Sagarmatha National Park permit and the NRs 500 (~$4) Airport Tax are often excluded and collected in cash. We always clarify that a "shared" flight requires a minimum of 3 to 5 people to depart; if a group doesn't form, you may be asked to pay a private charter rate (approx. $4,000) or reschedule. We recommend budgeting an extra $50 in cash for these local fees.

Does my travel insurance cover the helicopter tour if it gets canceled, or if I need to be evacuated? I've heard stories about companies demanding cash upfront before taking off.

Standard travel insurance covers emergency evacuations (medical necessity), but it does not cover a scenic tour or a cancellation due to weather unless you have "Cancel for Any Reason" (CFAR) coverage. Regarding the "cash upfront" concern: for medical rescues, we work directly with major insurers (like Global Rescue or World Nomads) to handle the bill. For the tour itself, if weather prevents the flight, we provide a full refund of the flight cost (minus ground transport fees), and we never demand "under-the-table" cash to jump the queue.

Can we actually land at Everest Base Camp (EBC), or is it just a flyover? Some sites say you land there, others say it’s restricted to Kala Patthar.

In reality, landing directly at EBC is generally restricted to emergencies and expedition support during the climbing season. The terrain at EBC is shifting glacier ice and is highly unstable for regular tourist landings. Instead, we land at Kala Patthar (5,450m). This is actually better for you: EBC is tucked under the mountain and has limited views of the summit, whereas Kala Patthar provides the iconic, unobstructed panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse that most travelers expect.

We are a group of 5 adults. Will we all be in the same helicopter the whole time, or do they split us up for the high-altitude part?

You will be together from Kathmandu to Lukla/Pheriche. However, helicopters have a strict weight limit at high altitudes (usually 250kg total for the pilot and passengers above 4,000m). For a group of 5, we must perform a shuttle. This means 2 or 3 people wait at Pheriche/Syangboche while the first group flies to Kala Patthar, then the pilot returns for the second group. This is a safety requirement, not an inefficiency—and ensures the aircraft can safely hover and land in the thin air.

What happens if the weather is bad on my scheduled day? I only have one free day in Kathmandu before my international flight home.

Weather in the Himalayas is unpredictable and can change in minutes. If we cannot fly, we first attempt to delay the takeoff by a few hours. If the day is a total washout, we offer to reschedule for the following morning or provide a full refund. Pro Tip: We strongly advise US/EU travelers to book their Heli Tour for their first available morning in Nepal. This gives you a "buffer day" in case of weather delays, ensuring you don't miss this bucket-list experience before your flight home.
