Frequently Asked Questions

The Langtang part seems easy, but how hard is the climb from Thulo Syabru to Gosainkunda? Is it just endless stairs?

Yes, the transition on Day 9 (Thulo Syabru to Laurebinayak) is famously grueling. You are gaining nearly 1,400m (4,600ft) in a single day. Unlike the gradual riverside walk of Langtang, this is a relentless "vertical" day on stone switchbacks and forested ridges. Most US/EU hikers find this the "make or break" day of the trip. We strictly advise a slow pace here; if you rush to reach the teahouses before the fog rolls in, you significantly increase your risk of altitude sickness before even reaching the lake.

I’m seeing 'Laurebina Pass' at 4,610m on the map. Do I actually cross this on a standard Langtang, Gosainkunda loop, or just visit the lake?

It depends on your exit route. In your 15-day itinerary, you visit the lakes and return via Chandanbari to Dhunche (Day 12-13), which means you do not have to cross the 4,610m pass unless you choose to exit toward Helambu. However, you will still reach 4,380m at the lake itself. We find that trekkers often underestimate the cold at the lakes; even in "warm" months, the stone teahouses at Gosainkunda are significantly colder than those in Kyanjin Gompa. A -15°C rated sleeping bag is a requirement, not a suggestion.

What is the food hygiene like at the higher camps like Laurebinayak and Gosainkunda? Is it just Dal Bhat?

While the menu includes pasta, pancakes, and "yak steaks" (usually water buffalo), we advise Western travelers to stick to Dal Bhat or freshly cooked items at these high elevations. Meat is carried up by porters for days without refrigeration; it is the primary cause of stomach issues for our clients. In the Gosainkunda region, teahouses are more basic than in Langtang. We recommend avoiding "western" cheese or meat dishes once you move above 3,500m to ensure your stomach doesn't ruin your summit day.

Is there cell service or Wi-Fi at the Gosaikunda lakes? I need to check in with family.

Expect a total digital blackout at the lakes. While Kyanjin Gompa (Day 5) often has Ncell/Nepal Telecom signal and paid Wi-Fi, the Gosainkunda basin is shielded by high ridges. Electricity is almost exclusively solar; if it’s a cloudy day, you won't be able to charge your phone even for a fee. We tell our US/EU clients to treat Day 10 and 11 as "off-grid." If communication is vital, we can provide a satellite messenger (Garmin InReach) for your group.

Wait, Day 11 is a 'Rest Day' at 4,165m? Is there anything to do, or am I just sitting in a cold room?

It is a "working" rest day. We don't just sit; we lead short acclimatization hikes to the surrounding lakes like Bhairav Kunda or Saraswati Kunda. This "climb high, sleep low" tactic is vital because the next day’s descent to Dhunche is very steep (dropping 2,400m). Without this rest day, many trekkers suffer from severe knee inflammation or delayed altitude headaches. We use this day to ensure you are physically "recharged" for the long walk out.
