Route Overview

The Island Peak Climbing route begins in Kathmandu, where climbers prepare before flying to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The trek follows the renowned Everest Base Camp trail, passing through scenic villages like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche. These stops allow trekkers to acclimatize while experiencing the vibrant Sherpa culture, monasteries, and panoramic Himalayan views.

From Dingboche, the route branches off toward Chhukung and continues to Island Peak Base Camp (5,200m), where climbers undergo final preparations. The summit push begins early in the morning, navigating glaciers, snow slopes, and a short but steep headwall to reach the Island Peak summit at 6,189 meters. After celebrating the achievement, the descent retraces the route back to Pangboche, Namche, and finally Lukla, followed by a scenic flight back to Kathmandu. This well-paced itinerary ensures proper acclimatization, maximizing safety and summit success.

The flight gives us a glimpse of the Himalayan panorama which includes Lhotse (8414m), Ama Dablam (6856m), and the Mt. Everest (8848m). After the thrilling experience of touching down at the Lukla airport, we take a brief rest and then set off towards Phakding. The beginning of the trek is an easy one heading through pleasant forest landscapes with occasional sightings of the majestic Himalayas. Overnight in Phakding.
We cross the famed Hillary suspension bridge and walk through the forested landscapes. With views of Kusum Khangkaru (6,367m) adorning the horizon, we follow the gradually opening Dudh Koshi valley. The journey ascends to the vibrant hamlets of Monjo, Chhuthawa, and Bengkar before reaching Jorsalle. Hereon, we trek through the Sagarmatha National Park. Enjoying the natural landscape, the journey reaches Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche Bazar.
The day begins with the lovely view of the Himalayas as the snowy summits of Mt. Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m) and Nuptse (7,855m) shine on the horizon. Today is the first and only day of acclimatization in this trek. After a lovely Himalayan breakfast we begin our journey and head towards the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde for the days hike. Alternatively, you can also decide to hike to the Everest View Hotel, which, on a clear day, grants views of the Mt. Everest (8,848m). Overnight in Namche Bazar.
Back on the trail today, we make our way towards Tengboche. With the summit of Ama Dablam (6,856m) as our constant companion, the hilly trail gradually ascends through the forested landscape. The trek along the Imja River reaches Tengboche after passing Sansa on the way. Tengboche is one of the highlighted destination of the journey due to its glorious views of the Himalayas. The monastery at Tengboche is also said to be the one of the oldest in the region. Overnight at Tengboche.
The trail heading out of Tengboche enters the stunning rhododendron forests heading towards Debuche. Crossing the hamlet of Debuche, we trek alongside the raging Imja Khola before crossing the river over a suspension bridge. Following the ascending route we reach the stunning plains of Pangboche. Continuing the journey, the trail abandons the pleasant hilly landscapes in favor of the rocky Himalayan one as we reach Dingboche. Overnight in Dingboche.
Chhukung sits 2 hours away from Dingboche and goes through the rocky Himalayan landscapes. Breaking off from the main Everest trail, we make our way through the glacial moraines with Himalayas on our either side all the way to Chhukung. With the views of Imja Tse, Lhotse, and Nuptse glaciers we head for Chhukung. The Chhukung village is the final resting point before the Island Peak Base Camp. Overnight in Chhukung.
Today we make our way to the Island Peak Base Camp and the journey is short yet strenuous. Out of Chhukung, the trail takes on the southern end of the valley before gradually turning towards the east finding the glacial moraines of Lhotse. Eyeing the stunning Imja Tse and Nuptse glaciers, the trail heads back towards the south reaching the Base Camp. Today we will also do some pre climb training as to how to use our equipment while also mapping out the plan for the summiting. In the base camp, you can see fellow campers and trekkers as well. Overnight in Island Peak Base Camp.
The day begins early as we make our way towards the summit. Scaling the rocky face of the Himalaya, we gradually make our way up enjoying the Himalayan sunrise. The glistening glaciers and the stunning Himalayan panorama drenched in the early morning sun is a sight to savor. The final stretch to the summit is least to say not pleasant as the trail ascends through crevasses and mountain slopes. After conquering the arduous trail, what awaits on the summit is a splendid Himalayan panorama. Enjoying the views from the summit, we make our way back to the Base Camp for the night. Overnight in Island Peak Base Camp.
The trek from today sees a gradual decrease in altitude as we make our way back. Leaving the snowy trail behind, the journey heads down through the rocky trail before meeting with the Everest Circuit trail at Dingboche crossing Chhukung on the way. Beyond Dingboche, the journey continues down towards the flat lands heading towards Pangboche. The final stretch of the journey is a pleasant one as we once again enter the stunning forested landscapes. Pangboche is a bit populated in comparison to Chhukung. Overnight in Pangboche.
Heading out from Pangboche, the trail continues descending alongside the Imja Khola before stopping at Debuche. Continuing on the Everest trail, the journey reaches Tengboche where we take a brief rest. Later, we make our way down the Dudh Koshi Valley. Enjoy the natural views we head towards Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
The final aspect of the trek takes us back to Lukla. Once again settling down on the Everest trail, the journey heads down through the hamlets of Jorsalle, Monjo, and Bengkar. We shall exit the stunning Sagarmatha National Park. Moving on, the journey reaches Phakding from where we can see the sharp summit of Ama Dablam (6,856m). Descending back to Lukla concludes our journey. Overnight in Lukla.
The day once again begins early as we experience the same thrill in taking off from the Lukla airstrip. Enjoy the pleasant landscapes and the picturesque mountain flight back to Kathmandu. Back at the city we head directly to our hotel and freshen up. This wraps up the activities for the day and you are free to enjoy the rest of the day at your own discretion. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Just in case an unforeseen event hampers our itinerary we keep a day in reserve to ensure that our objectives are met. Bad weather can often hamper flights heading in and out of Lukla for which we might need to spend an extra day acclimatizing. In such cases, reserve day are used. In case of no such delays and contingencies, you can use today as a free day to explore the Kathmandu valley. You will be treated with a farewell dinner at the end of the day. Overnight at Kathmandu.
Our representatives will once again drop you back at the Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight back home. We hope you had a lovely time with us and we look forward in seeing you again.
