The Khopra Danda Trek is a superb alternative to the busier trails in the Annapurna region. Its main draw is the spectacular, unobstructed sunrise view from Khopra Ridge (3,660m) directly facing the heart of the Annapurna massif, without the crowds of Poon Hill. The route combines classic Annapurna scenery with quieter trails and a challenging optional day hike to the sacred Khayer Lake.

This trek is best suited for walkers with a moderate level of fitness who are comfortable with consecutive days of hiking, including some steep sections and stone stairs. It is not ideal for first-time trekkers or those seeking luxury. The trail offers a genuine teahouse experience, basic but comfortable lodges, and fantastic cultural exposure in Gurung and Magar villages like Ghandruk.

The trek starts with a drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, following the Modi Khola river. The first days ascend through vibrant rhododendron and oak forests, past waterfalls and stone-paved trails to the large Gurung village of Ghandruk. From there, the path leads to Tadapani before veering off the main circuit towards the more remote and serene Khopra Ridge. The trail here is less maintained, with rougher paths and fewer teahouses, offering a true sense of adventure. After Khopra, the route descends to Swanta and connects to Ghorepani and Poon Hill, completing a fantastic loop. Teahouses are basic but warm, with standard menus of dal bhat, noodles, and pancakes.

Khopra Danda Trek Highlights

  • Sunrise from Khopra Ridge overlooking Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, and the entire Annapurna South range.
  • The challenging but rewarding pilgrimage to the high-altitude, glacial Khayer Lake (4,600m).
  • Exploring the authentic, slate-roofed Gurung village of Ghandruk.
  • Walking through dense rhododendron forests, especially stunning if trekking in spring.
  • A moderate difficulty level that rewards effort with immense views and cultural insight.
  • Photography opportunities of landscapes, mountain vistas, and village life.
  • Enjoying the camaraderie of family-run teahouses off the beaten path.

Why Choose This Khopra Danda Trek?

  • More solitude compared to the classic Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill routes.
  • Efficient 7-day trekking loop that packs in high mountain views.
  • Requires a good baseline fitness but does not involve extreme altitude.
  • Deep cultural interactions in villages less affected by mass tourism.
  • A varied journey from subtropical valleys to alpine ridges.
  • Comfortable enough teahouses for a good rest each night.
  • Managed altitude profile, with a sensible acclimatization day built in.

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

After clearing immigration at Tribhuvan International Airport, our staff will meet you with a name card and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel or nearby. This day is intentionally free for rest after travel. If arriving early, you might stroll through Thamel's lanes or visit Swayambhunath Stupa for city views, but avoid strenuous activity before trekking begins.

Day 3

Drive to Nayapul and Trek to Ghandruk

A 1.5-hour drive from Pokhara brings you to Nayapul (1,070m), where the trek begins. The trail follows the Modi Khola upstream through terraced farms and subtropical forest. After crossing a suspension bridge near Kimche, you climb stone steps into Ghandruk—a Gurung village with slate-roofed houses and Annapurna views opening above the settlement.

Duration: 5 Hrs
Distance: 11 KM
Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tea House
Mode of Transportation: Private Vehicle
Day 4

Ghandruk to Tadapani

This short but steep day climbs 700 meters via continuous stone steps through rhododendron and oak forest. The trail is well-maintained but demanding on the knees. Tadapani sits on a forested ridge with limited mountain views initially, though clearing skies often reveal Machhapuchhre from lodge terraces by afternoon.

Max Altitude: 2,650m (8,694ft)
Duration: 3 Hrs
Distance: 6 KM
Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tea House
Day 5

Tadapani to Dobato

Leaving the main Annapurna trail behind, you ascend north through dense rhododendron forest with occasional clearings. The path crosses small streams and passes a few seasonal herder huts before reaching Dobato—a basic ridge settlement with 3–4 lodges. Views remain limited by forest cover, but the sense of remoteness becomes noticeable.

Max Altitude: 3,350m (10,990ft)
Duration: 5 Hrs
Distance: 10 KM
Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tea House
Day 6

Dobato to Chistibung

A gentle descent follows the ridge contour through open forest and high pastures. The trail drops to Chistibung, a small Magar hamlet beside a stream with several family-run lodges. This lower altitude provides good acclimatization before the climb to Khopra Ridge tomorrow.

Max Altitude: 2,975m (9,760ft)
Duration: 4 Hrs
Distance: 8 KM
Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tea House
Day 7

Chistibung to Khopra Ridge

The steady climb gains 700 meters through mixed forest that gradually opens to reveal the Kali Gandaki valley below. As you near the ridge, Annapurna South and Nilgiri appear directly ahead. Lodges cluster along the narrow ridge crest, with the best viewpoints a 10-minute walk beyond the main settlement.

Max Altitude: 3,660m (12,007ft)
Duration: 5 Hrs
Distance: 7 KM
Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tea House
Day 8

Rest Day at Khopra Ridge with Khayer Lake Hike

Today allows acclimatization and exploration. Most trekkers hike to Khayer Lake—a sacred high-altitude lake at 4,040 meters reached via a steady 2–2.5 hour climb through pastureland. The trail passes herder camps and may offer sightings of Himalayan thar. Return to Khopra for afternoon rest; sunset views from the ridge are exceptional.

Max Altitude: 3,660m (12,007ft)
Duration: 5 Hrs
Distance: 8 KM
Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tea House
Day 9

Khopra Ridge to Swanta

A long, sustained descent drops 1,400 meters via stone steps and forest trails to the Kali Gandaki valley floor. The path crosses multiple streams before reaching Swanta—a quiet Magar village with basic lodges beside terraced fields. This day tests knee strength; trekking poles are essential.

Max Altitude: 2,214m (7,263ft)
Duration: 6 Hrs
Distance: 12 KM
Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tea House
Day 10

Swanta to Ghorepani

The trail climbs gradually through rhododendron forest and Magar settlements like Bayeli before joining the main Ghorepani route near Chistibung Pass. Afternoon arrival in Ghorepani allows time to rest before tomorrow's pre-dawn hike. Lodges here are more developed but busier than on the Khopra section.

Duration: 6 Hrs
Distance: 11 KM
Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tea House
Day 11
