The Makalu Base Camp Trek is for the experienced trekker seeking a true wilderness experience far from the crowded trails of the Everest region. This trek takes you into the heart of the Makalu Barun National Park, offering staggering views of Makalu (8,485m), the world's fifth highest mountain, alongside a culturally rich journey through remote villages.

This trek is best suited for those with previous high-altitude trekking experience. The trails are often steep, rugged, and involve significant altitude gain and loss each day. It is not ideal for first-time trekkers or those looking for luxury. The landscape transforms from lush, terraced farmlands and dense rhododendron forests into a stark, high-alpine world of moraines and glaciers.

The main highlight, based on my guiding experience, is the profound sense of isolation and the panoramic view from Makalu Base Camp itself, where you are surrounded by an amphitheater of towering peaks including Everest and Lhotse. The comfort level is basic, with simple teahouses, but the reward is an authentic and challenging Himalayan adventure.

The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, followed by a drive to the trailhead at Chichila. The initial days involve challenging ascents and descents through subtropical forests and terraced fields, passing through ethnic Sherpa and Rai villages like Num, Seduwa, and Tashigaon. The stone steps here are legendary for their steepness.

Above Tashigaon, the trail enters the Makalu Barun National Park. The forest becomes thicker with pine and rhododendron, leading up to Khongma Danda (La), a tough pass at 3,500m. Beyond this, the landscape opens into high alpine pastures (kharkas) like Dobate and Yangri Kharka. The final approach to base camp is a rocky, glacial moraine walk. Teahouses are basic, with shared toilets and menus limited to dal bhat, noodles, and simple snacks. As you gain altitude, the availability of amenities decreases, so self-sufficiency is key.

Makalu Barun Base Camp Trek Highlights

  • Close-up views of Makalu (8,485m), Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), and the Barun Glacier.
  • Trekking through the biologically diverse Makalu Barun National Park.
  • Experiencing the culture of remote Rai and Sherpa communities in villages like Seduwa.
  • Crossing the challenging Khongma La pass (3,500m).
  • The stark, powerful scenery at Makalu Base Camp (4,870m).
  • A true wilderness trek with significantly fewer trekkers than other major routes.
  • Basic but genuine teahouse experience.

Why Choose This Makalu Barun Base Camp Trek?

  • For Wilderness Seekers: Experience one of Nepal's least commercialized major treks.
  • High-Altitude Challenge: Ideal for seasoned trekkers wanting a strenuous, technical route.
  • Cultural Depth: Engage with indigenous communities relatively untouched by mass tourism.
  • Scenic Variety: From lowland villages to high glacial valleys.
  • Logistical Simplicity (Relative): While remote, it is a teahouse trek, avoiding the need for full camping support.

Day 2

An early morning scenic flight to Tumlingtar in the lowlands. Upon arrival, we meet our trekking crew and begin the drive uphill on a winding road to the small village of Chichila, our trailhead, where we spend our first night.

Max Altitude: 1,980m (6,496ft)
Duration: 50-min flight, 3-4 hour drive
Distance: 40 km drive
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Chichila teahouse
Mode of Transportation: Flight & Private Vehicle
Day 3

Trek from Chichila to Num

The trail initially descends to the Sabaya Khola before a long, steep climb up a ridge to Num. This is a challenging first walking day, offering your first distant views of Makalu and the Arun Valley. The village clings to the hillside.

Max Altitude: 1,560m (5,118ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: 10 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Num Tea House
Day 4

Trek from Num to Seduwa

A dramatic day starting with a steep, sustained descent of over 800m to the Arun River. After crossing the river on a suspension bridge, you face an equally steep 700m ascent to Seduwa. This is where you'll register at the Makalu Barun National Park entry post.

Max Altitude: 1,500m (4,921ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: 8 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Seduwa teahouse
Day 5

Trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon

A shorter but steady climbing day through terraced fields and cardamom plantations. The trail passes through several small hamlets before reaching Tashigaon, a major village and the last permanent settlement on the route. Use the afternoon to prepare for the significant altitude gain ahead.

Max Altitude: 2,100m (6,889ft)
Duration: 4-5 hours
Distance: 6 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tashigaon Teahouse
Day 6

Acclimatization Day in Tashigaon

A crucial rest day for acclimatization. You can take short hikes to higher ridges for views or explore the village. Proper acclimatization here significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness on the upcoming climb to Khongma Danda.

Max Altitude: 2,100m (6,889ft)
Meals: breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tashigaon teahouse
Day 7

Trek from Tashigaon to Khongma Danda

One of the toughest days. The trail climbs relentlessly through beautiful forests of rhododendron and pine, gaining 1,400m. You'll pass the seasonal herders' settlements of Kauma and Gothey before reaching the few basic lodges at Khongma Danda, just below the pass.

Max Altitude: 3,500m (11,482ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: 7 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Khongma Danda tea House
Day 8

Acclimatization Day at Khongma Danda

Another essential acclimatization day. A recommended hike is to the top of Khongma La (Pass) at 3,800m for excellent views, then return to sleep lower. This "climb high, sleep low" principle is key to a successful ascent.

Max Altitude: 3,500m (11,482ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Khongma Danda teahouse
Day 9

Trek from Khongma Danda to Dobate

The day starts with crossing the Khongma La (3,800m). The trail then traverses a rocky landscape, passing by pristine lakes like Kalo Pokhari and descending into the lush Barun Valley. Dobate is a small settlement at the confluence of two rivers.

Max Altitude: 3,700m (12,139ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: 9 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Dobate Teahouse
Day 10

Trek from Dobate to Yangri Kharka

A pleasant walk up the widening Barun Valley on a gentler trail. You'll walk through juniper and rhododendron forests with constant views of the surrounding peaks. Yangri Kharka is a large, scenic grazing pasture with a couple of basic lodges.

Max Altitude: 3,557m (11,669ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: 8 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Yangri Kharka Teahouse
Day 11

Trek from Yangri Kharka to Langmale Kharka

The air gets thinner as you continue up the valley. The vegetation thins out, giving way to a rugged, alpine landscape. You'll see the massive west face of Makalu towering ahead. Langmale Kharka is a remote outpost with very basic lodges; the altitude will be felt here.

Max Altitude: 4,410m (14,468ft)
Duration: 5-6 hours
Distance: 7 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Langmale Kharka Teahouse
Day 12

Trek from Langmale Kharka to Makalu Base Camp

A challenging day due to the high altitude. The trail winds over rocky moraine and past the spectacular Barun Pokhari (lake). The final approach to Makalu Base Camp is across a barren glacial landscape. The view of Makalu's south face is utterly breathtaking and worth every step.

Max Altitude: 4,870m (15,977ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: 6 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Makalu Base Camp teahouse
Day 13

Explore Makalu Base Camp

A day to rest, explore, and absorb the monumental scenery. You can hike a little higher towards the Barun Glacier for different perspectives of Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and Chamlang. Hydration and rest are priorities at this altitude.

Max Altitude: 4,870m (15,977ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Makalu Base Camp teahouse
Day 14

Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangri Kharka

Begin the return journey, retracing your steps down the Barun Valley. The descent is long but easier on the lungs, and the return to thicker air and greener surroundings at Yangri Kharka is a welcome feeling.

Max Altitude: 3,557m (11,669ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: 13 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Duration: 5-6 hours
Distance: 8 km
Accommodation: Num teahouse
