Frequently Asked Questions

How are the actual road conditions from Pokhara to Muktinath right now? I keep hearing mixed things about it being paved vs. total dirt.

It is a mix, but expect a "dual-sport" experience. The road from Pokhara to Beni is mostly paved but often broken. From Beni to Jomsom and up to Muktinath, you are looking at roughly 100 km of off-road terrain, loose gravel, river crossings, and "bull-dust." In 2026, the Prithvi Highway (Kathmandu to Pokhara) is still under heavy construction, meaning the first 200 km will be very dusty with frequent "one-way" traffic stops. We advise riders to prepare for significant fatigue on Day 1 and Day 2 due to these conditions.

Does my standard World Nomads or Allianz travel insurance cover me if I crash a 411cc Himalayan in the mountains?

Likely no, unless you have a specific "motorcycle" or "adventure sports" add-on. Most standard policies exclude two-wheelers entirely or limit coverage to 125cc engines. Furthermore, almost no international travel insurance covers the physical damage to our bikes. As stated in our price exclusions, you are responsible for repair costs if you drop the bike. We strictly require you to verify that your policy includes "Emergency Heli-Evacuation" at altitudes up to 4,000m, as a road evacuation from Muktinath can take 24+ hours.

Is it safe for a solo female rider to join a group for Mustang? I’m worried about both the terrain and the social environment.

Socially, Nepal is incredibly safe for solo women; however, the Mustang terrain is physically demanding. You will face high-altitude winds in the Kali Gandaki Valley that can literally push a bike across the road. We frequently host solo female riders in our groups. Our lead guides are trained to provide a "no-pressure" environment, and if the wind or terrain becomes too much, we have the Support Jeep (for groups of 5+) where you can load your bike and ride comfortably for a section.

Do I really need an International Driving Permit (IDP) if I have a full motorcycle license from the UK/US?

Yes. While local traffic police might occasionally overlook a home country license, your insurance will be voided in the event of an accident if you do not have a valid IDP (Category A). We check for both your original license and the IDP during the briefing in Kathmandu. If you don't have one, we can assist you with local paperwork, but it’s best to get the 1949 or 1968 convention IDP from your home country before flying to Nepal.

How do you handle altitude sickness on a bike? You're going from 800m to 3,800m in just a few days.

This is a major risk because motorbikes allow you to gain altitude much faster than your body can acclimate. On Day 3, we climb from 2,600m to 3,760m. We manage this by keeping the Day 2 and Day 3 riding hours short (only 70-110 km). Our guides carry canned oxygen and pulse oximeters. We tell all our US/EU clients: if you feel a persistent headache or nausea at Muktinath, we do not "sleep on it." We immediately ride you back down to Jomsom (2,700m), which usually resolves symptoms instantly.

What are the extra costs I should actually budget for? 'Personal expenses' is too vague for me.

For a 7-day tour, we suggest budgeting an extra $250–$400 USD. This covers:

Bike Damage Deposit: Usually $200–$500 (refundable if no damage).

Connectivity: $20 for a local Ncell SIM and data (Wi-Fi in Mustang is notoriously unreliable).

Tips: $50–$100 total for the guide and mechanic (standard practice in Nepal).

Showers/Charging: Some teahouses charge $2–$5 for gas-heated showers or phone charging.

Heritage Fees: About $30–$40 for sightseeing in Kathmandu.
