The Phoksundo Lake Trek takes you into the remote Dolpo region of western Nepal, an area that still feels wild and untouched compared to the Everest or Annapurna regions. The trek leads through deep river gorges, pine and cedar forests, and traditional Bon and Tibetan Buddhist villages before reaching the striking turquoise waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake. This lake sits below high barren cliffs and feels completely different from the greener eastern Himalayan trails.

This trek is best suited for trekkers who want a quieter route with fewer crowds and are comfortable walking long days on well defined but remote trails. It is suitable for fit beginners with trekking experience and intermediate trekkers. It may not be ideal for travelers seeking luxury lodges or short walking days, as facilities are basic and distances can be long.

Walking comfort varies by day. Lower sections are warmer with stone steps and riverside paths, while higher sections near Phoksundo are cooler, drier, and more exposed. The main highlight is the approach to Phoksundo Lake itself, where the landscape suddenly opens and the color of the lake feels unreal, especially in morning light.

The trek starts with flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and onward to Juphal, the gateway to Lower Dolpo. From Juphal, the trail descends to Dunai and then gradually climbs north following the Thuli Bheri River. Each day the trail becomes more remote, with fewer villages and deeper forest sections.

You walk through villages like Chhepka and Shyanta where life moves slowly and people depend on farming and trade. The trail includes suspension bridges, narrow cliff paths, forested sections, and steady stone staircases. The climb toward Phoksundo includes a long contouring trail above the river and a final ascent past Phoksundo Waterfall, one of the highest in Nepal.

Teahouse culture is simple. Expect basic lodges with shared rooms and common dining areas. Meals are limited but filling, usually dal bhat, noodles, potatoes, and soup. Electricity is limited and hot showers are not always available, especially above Chhepka.

• Traditional Bon and Tibetan Buddhist villages
• Pine, cedar, and juniper forests
