Many people think trekking in Nepal is impossible during the monsoon season, but that is not completely true. While heavy rainfall affects several popular trekking regions like Everest and Annapurna, there are still many beautiful treks in Nepal that remain possible and enjoyable during monsoon months from June to August.

The best monsoon treks are usually located in Nepal’s rain-shadow regions, where the Himalayan mountains block much of the seasonal rainfall. Areas like Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Nar Phu Valley, and parts of the Annapurna region receive far less rain compared to lower hill regions. These treks often offer clearer mountain views, dry landscapes, Tibetan-influenced culture, and fewer crowds during the summer season.

Among all monsoon trekking destinations, the Upper Mustang Trek is one of the most popular choices. Located beyond the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Upper Mustang stays relatively dry even during peak monsoon months. Trekkers can explore ancient monasteries, traditional villages, caves, and dramatic desert-like Himalayan landscapes while avoiding heavy rainfall found in other parts of Nepal.

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is another excellent monsoon trekking option for travelers seeking remote mountain culture and off-the-beaten-path adventure. Similarly, Upper Dolpo Trek offers one of the most isolated and culturally rich trekking experiences in Nepal during summer.

Short lower-altitude treks like Ghorepani Poon Hill, Mardi Himal Trek, or Langtang Valley Trek are also possible during monsoon, although trekkers should expect occasional rain, muddy trails, leeches, and cloudy mountain views. On the positive side, monsoon trekking brings greener forests, blooming landscapes, waterfalls, fresh mountain air, and fewer tourists along the trails.

Trekking during monsoon season also requires additional preparation. Waterproof clothing, rain covers, proper trekking boots, insect protection, and flexible itineraries become very important. Weather-related transportation delays can occasionally affect domestic flights and road travel during this period.

Despite the challenges, monsoon trekking in Nepal can offer a very unique experience for travelers who prefer peaceful trails, dramatic green scenery, and authentic local culture away from peak trekking crowds.
