Fly to Lukla or drive to Thamdanda? Compare the Everest Base Camp trek by flight ($2,650, 15 days) and by road ($1,599, 16 days) — time, price, delay risk and scenery — and pick the route that suits you.
EBC by Flight vs by Road: Which Should You Book?
There are two ways to reach Everest Base Camp: fly to Lukla, or drive to Thamdanda and walk in. Both end at the same place — Everest Base Camp at 5,364 m, with the same sunrise from Kala Patthar at 5,545 m. The difference is time, price, and whether you ever get on a plane. Here is the honest comparison, and the route we run as the Everest Base Camp Trek by Road — No Flight, No Flight Delays ($1,599, 16 days).
Time: 15 Days by Flight, 16 Days by Road
By flight, the trek is 15 days: the Kathmandu–Lukla flight puts you on the trail in under an hour. By road, it is 16 days — the drive from Kathmandu to Thamdanda replaces the flight, and the trekking starts there. The trail days are the same on both: two rest days in Namche, Everest views from Tengboche Monastery, a sunrise from Kala Patthar at 5,545 m, and Everest Base Camp at 5,364 m.
Price: $2,650 by Flight, $1,599 by Road
Our all-inclusive Everest Base Camp Trek by flight is $2,650 per person (was $2,750). The by-road version is $1,599 per person — $1,051 less. The main saving is the Lukla flights, which cost around $180–$220 round trip when bought separately. Both treks include a licensed guide, porter and permits, and both are priced per person.
Delay Risk: Lukla Flights vs No Flight at All
This is the real reason many trekkers choose the road. Lukla flights can be delayed by bad weather — that is normal, especially in the busy season — and we recommend keeping 2 buffer days at the end of your trek for the return flight to Kathmandu. By road there is no flight to delay: you drive in, and you drive out. If flight delays worry you, the by-road trek removes that risk entirely.
Scenery: Same Trail, Different Way In
Once you are on the trail, the scenery is the same on both routes: Sherpa villages, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery, Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp. The difference is the journey in. By flight you get the famous mountain airstrip at Lukla. By road you drive through the hills to Thamdanda — the gateway to the Everest region — and walk in from there. Neither route is more scenic on the trail itself; the choice is about how you want to arrive.
Who Should Pick the Road?
Pick the road if: you worry about Lukla flights or flight delays; you would rather not fly in a small mountain plane; you want to save $1,051; or you have an extra day. Pick the flight if: you are short on time and want the 15-day trek; or you want the classic Lukla flight experience. Either way, you stand at Everest Base Camp.
