Arun Valley Trek

A perfect trek in Nepal for someone who wishes to escape from the mainstream trekking destinations and enjoy the pristine landscape. The Arun Valley Salpa Bhanjyang trek is the most beautiful trek in Nepal sandwiched between the foothills of the mammoth mountains of Everest and Makalu. The trails run through abundantly vegetated landscapes, with the backdrop of the mountains. The views of the mountains include Everest (8848m), Makalu (8463m), Chamlang (7319m), and Ama Dablam (6856m) amongst others. ARUN VALLEY SALPA BHANJYANG TREK OVERVIEW

Your 13-day trip begins with your arrival in Kathmandu. The real, Arun Valley trekking begins with a scenic private vehicle transport to Phaplu Salleri. From Phaplu Salleri, you start your trek towards Salpa Bhanjyang. The lush forests and beautifully formed hills at the foot of the mountains keep us company as we continue over through Tibetan Camp, Budhi Danda, Sontag, and Sanam.

And then, trail contouring on the hillsides leads us to Salpa pass atop the Salpa Phedi. You climb up to Salpa Bhanjyang and from the top enjoy the mountain range in the distance. In Salpa Phedi, you will visit the Salpa Pokhari, a holy lake in the region. From Salpa Phedi, we descend to Gothe Bazaar. Next, we trek to Kattike and then to Tumlingtar. Our trek wraps up as we arrive at Tumlingtar from where we head back to Kathmandu.

Throughout this Arun valley Salpa Bhanjyang Trek, a distant view of the mountain range will keep you company. You will cross and stay overnight in many ethnic villages. The ethnic villages found in this region are Rai, Sherpa, Limbu, Yakkha, and Tamang. The recommended times of trekking are spring (March-May) and October (September to November). Spring offers blooming flowers and vegetation while autumn offers usually clear skies.

After breakfast, we head towards Phaplu Salleri by a company jeep. En route, you’ll experience the wonderful view of the hills and the settlements that sit atop them as the road twists and turns. Phaplu Salleri is mostly a Tibetan community. From Phaplu Salleri, we make our way to the Tibetan Camp. It is a short walk from the bus stop to the camp. Overnight in Tibetan Camp.

The lush green landscape that leads to Budhi danda is marked by many small Buddhist stupas and Gumbas on the way. The settlements here house the Sherpa and Magar community. The long trek on this day goes along a mostly level trail. The views of the peaceful green meadows, yak pastures, and terraced farmlands remain beautiful throughout. Overnight in Budhi Danda.

It is again a long day’s trek however, the trek is pleasant over the 5-6 hours duration. You will trek through a wilderness wonderland along the river. The sound of birds singing keep us company while, tall and slender pine and Rhododendron trees surround us. Along the way, you will see small settlements of mostly Sherpa and Rai people. They live a very minimalistic and traditional lifestyle. Overnight in Sotang.

Today, we climb up to Gudel, a small village with thriving Rai, Magar, and Limbu communities. On the way to Gudel, we see the outstanding view of mountains like Mt Makalu (8463m) and Mt. Everest (8848m) to the northern side. More views of mountains will appear as we get to Gudel. The village is set amongst the greenery of terraced farmlands where you may notice the locals working to grow their crops. Overnight in Gudel.

The trek to Sanam begins with a steady climb up a ridge beside Gudel. After the ridge, we arrive at Chachalung. The trek smoothes to a gradual ascent. You continue on to the village of Share, beyond which is an enormous Boulder engraved with Buddhist inscriptions. Shortly after, you arrive at the village of Tiu but not before crossing a crackling waterfall. Next stop is Sanam, a simple village with cattle herders. Overnight in Sanam.

Today, we trek to Salpa Phedi on hillsides that seem to be carpeted with an abundance of mosses and Lichens in the area. The trek carries along adjacent to the stream bank until you climb up to Salpa Bhanjyang. From here, you get a view of Makalu and Chamlang (7321m) mountains in the distance. You descend further crossing Guranse, Bilbate, Jaubari, and finally, arrive at Salpa Phedi. It sits at the confluence of the Irkhuwa and Sanu rivers. Overnight in Salpa Phedi.

You begin our trek beside the Sanu Khola in the east. You pass through lush forests and paddy terraces, eventually arriving at the village of Tendor. From Tendor, we cross Dobhane and continue eastward through a suspension bridge. Two hours beyond Dobhane is the eye-catching village of Gothe Bazaar. The village sits at the opening of the Bengkhawa Khola and is home to the Rai Kiranti people. Overnight in Gothe Bazaar.

You walk along the northern bank of Irkhuwa Khola with a misty landscape adorned with vivid green paddy terraces, and orange and banana plantations. It’s a gradual uphill climb amidst rice terraces and you arrive at the Rai village of Marduwa. From the top of the ridge, you see a richly vegetated and undisturbed landscape of the Arun valley. The trek continues along Arun Koshi until you arrive at the Kattike.

From Kattike, we arrive at Chyawabesi which lies across a suspension bridge. As we descend to lower elevation the villages are more consisting of the Brahmin and Chhetri population. From Chewabesi, it’s about an hour and a half’s steady climb to Bheteni where we stop for Lunch. We take the east bank of the Arun Koshi along to Kumal Gaon and then up to Tumlingtar subsequently. Overnight in Tumlingtar.

Your trek concludes as you fly over from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu. From the plane, you get aerial views of the green meadows, lush forests, and the mighty Himalayas that you pass during the trek.
